Cashmere for Autumn: What to Look For

Autumn asks a lot of a sweater. The morning is cold, the afternoon is mild, and by evening you are glad you brought another layer.

That is where cashmere earns its place: warm without feeling heavy, easy over a shirt and comfortable under a coat. But the best choice is not always the thickest one. A few details make a greater difference.

Start with how you will wear it

For changeable days, a fine or medium-weight knit is often the most useful. It can be worn on its own indoors, over a shirt outside, then under a coat when the temperature drops. A cardigan gives you more control; a crew neck is simpler and usually easier to dress up or down.

Weight is about use. A heavier knit may feel warmer and more substantial, while a lighter one can be easier to layer. Neither is a quality grade. Ply describes how many strands make up the yarn; it helps explain the character of a knit, but does not tell the whole story. We look at this in more detail in our guide to cashmere knitwear quality, ply and weight.

A good fit leaves room for a shirt

Think about the coat you will wear over it. Generous sleeves can feel relaxed on their own and bunch beneath a tailored jacket. A cleaner shoulder and a little room through the body tend to make a sweater easier to layer.

Check the garment measurements, especially chest, shoulder and sleeve length. They tell you more than the size label alone. A crew neck works well over a shirt; a V-neck leaves space for a collar; a cardigan is useful when the day keeps changing its mind.

Read the details, not just the word “cashmere”

“100% cashmere” tells you the fibre composition. To understand the garment, look for more: where the fibre comes from, where the piece is made, how it is constructed, and how it should be cared for. Clear measurements and close-up images help too.

Grade labels can be useful when a brand explains them. On their own, they tell you little about the finished sweater. Fibre, yarn, knit and finishing all shape how it feels and wears. Our guide to recognising high-quality cashmere goes deeper into those details.

At Milan x Dominica, our knitwear uses Grade A cashmere from Ladakh and is crafted in Nepal. Each piece has its own fit and construction, so the product details matter as much as the fibre line.

Keep care simple

Follow the instructions for the garment. Cashmere knits are generally best dried flat and stored folded; hanging can pull them out of shape. Some pilling may appear where fabric rubs against itself. A little is part of wearing a fine knit, and a gentle cashmere comb can help when needed.

What to look for, at a glance

Detail Why it matters in autumn
Fine or medium weight Easier to wear indoors and layer outside
Room through the shoulders and sleeves Sits more comfortably under a coat
Clear fibre and making details Helps you understand what you are buying
Practical care guidance Makes regular wear easier to manage

The right autumn layer is the one that fits the way you already dress: a sweater you can put on in the morning, keep on through the day and reach for again next week.
